I almost always wake up with a song in my head.  I'm not sure why it happens but it does.  Most of the time I like the songs in my head.  Most of the time they are fun current songs that help me get through my morning routine without having to turn on the radio.  It's basically amazing...it's probably my mutant ability (side note: if you haven't seen X-Men: First Class do it.  I really liked it and I am not a X-Men junky).

Today, however, the song in my head was not my favorite.  What was the song you ask?  Teddy Bear's Picnic.  It was not a happy morning.  For real...where the heck did that song come from?  I'm pretty sure the last time I actively listened to that song was in kindergarten when we had our own Teddy Bear picnic. 

Also, the song is back in my head.  Ugh.  No, double ugh. 

Wedding Music

**Note: If you make it through this post I'll send you something nice in the mail.**

We've hired Bryce to sing/play at the wedding told Bryce he doesn't have to buy us a wedding gift if he'll sing/play at our wedding.

I couldn't figure out much music I really wanted him to play so I asked Court to figure out the songs for me.


The text conversation went like this:

Me: Help me think of good songs Bryce could play at the reception as "atmosphere" music.

Court: Anything by Ke$ha!

Me: Ummm... probably not.

Court: You're no fun!

Ground Control

On Monday, my friends and I went to support our friend Bryce and his band Ground Control at Muse Music in Provo.  We had a super time dancing and rocking out to killer music.

How Often Does This Happen to You?

You put your iPod on shuffle and skip through almost every song until you find one you really want to listen to? I do it all the time.

I swear I like all the songs on my iPod but when it goes into shuffle mode I hate them. It's a weird cosmic event.

Today was a different day though. It was like my iPod was giving me a musical, early birthday present. Every song was like my iPod was saying, "I love you, Ash J. You're amazing. Here's an amazing song. You're welcome." Song after song it happened. I never had to skip, not once.

I spent my 20 minute drive to school and 20 minutes home from school singing to songs like it was my American Idol audition. I belted out such classics as The Thing Song by Sisqo, Billy Jean by Michael Jackson, Brown Eyes by Destiny's Child, Don't Let it Go to Your Head by Fefe Dobson, I Can Hear the Bells from Hairspray, Lean on Me by Bill Withers, Disney classics like One Jump Ahead and Part of Your World, 99 Problems (with some self editing) by Jay-Z, Eh, Eh by Lady Gaga, Take My Hand by The Cab, and Like a Boy by Ciara.

Oh. It was a magical car ride. Thanks, iPod. You're the best even if your battery life is about as long as my students' attention span.

The VMAs...Always a Good Time

Oh, wow. Those are the only words I have after watching the VMAs (in fast forward...I love Tivo!).

Here's a run down on me watching and my reaction to everything.

Show starts out with the host heckling Lady Gaga.

Host: 'Gaga is a hermaphrodite...' [Cut to Gaga]

Me: "What?! Are those feathers? Who's wearing the other half of her mask?"

More show happens...nothing involving The Gaga but I did get to try to find her in the audience. It was kinda like a game of Where's Waldo? but it was more like What's Gaga Wearing Now?

0:04--"Wow. All white like angels."

0:10--"Nice Pierrot. This is obviously going to be amazing."

0:26--"Ok. She looks like the Easter Bunny's crazy uncle."
0:30--"Is that guy wearing underwear on his face?"

1:00--"Ooo...sparkles."

1:02--"Yes! She has a cape too!"
1:07--"Yes! Another costume change."

1:13--"Why is that guy still wearing underwear on his face?"

1:18-1:34--"Sweet choreography!"
2:16--"Bedazzled wheel chair...Why?"

2:22--"Cane...Why?"

2:31--"I think the cane made her very angry."

2:49--"That guy was on So You Think You Can Dance. I think his name is Mark. He has weird fingers."

3:05--"Playing the piano with your leg up = super classy."

3:21--"Is that blood?"

3:24--"Yep. It's blood. Why?"

3:34--"She should really go see a doctor. That's not just a paper cut."

4:00--"There is still underwear on your face, dude."

4:15--"Holy cow! Blood in your eye. Yuck."

{This section was at one time the video of Lady Gaga's performance. However, I keep putting up videos that the person doesn't own and MTV takes them down. If I ever find an "official" video I will put it back up. Until then, click here to watch it...it's classic.}

You think Lady has no more tricks up her sleeve? Oh, you are wrong...so wrong.

There is yet another wardrobe change (this one's the best...make sure you're sitting down before you look).

A see-through, red lace dress with a mask, gloves and crown. Who saw that one coming? Really. No one.

Then you think it's over. She cannot get any better, right? WRONG!! Last wardrobe change.


I have no idea what that is...a wreath made of feathers...the left over hair from one of her many crazy hair styles...an old costume from Cats...trimmed and styled Santa Claus wig and beard? I don't know but I do know it's awesome and I'd like to know what Gaga was thinking through the night.

That was the last crazy thing the Gaga did. But Kanye West was a different story.

If you haven't heard...Kanye got on stage while Taylor Swift was accepting her award and said how Beyonce had the best video of all time (and implied that it was ridiculous that Taylor would have won.)

Kanye: "Here. Hold this moonman while I take the microphone."

Taylor: "Ok but I thought I was supposed to talk."

Look at her face...she's so confused.

But in the end Beyonce was a class act and let Taylor give her speech during the time Beyonce was supposed to give hers.

Kayne = word I don't use. Read Kelly Clarkson's blog about it. I think she sums it up nicely.

Musical Spring Cleaning

I'm a musical pack rat. I have almost filled my iPod (about 7,000 songs, I know...ridiculous). I have recently noticed my computer really taking its sweet time to do things so I decided that today was the day that I would get rid of music I don't listen to any more. I have tried to do this often but I always have this paranoid thought of "What if I decide I want to listen to them again one day? Then what?" Today I pushed those paranoid thoughts out the window and started deleting. I'm down to about 4,500 songs now which is still insane but I can't bare to part with them.

Because of all this 'cleaning,' I have rediscovered some music that I at one time loved but due to the vast amount of music on my iPod, I haven't listened to in a long time.

These songs bring back so many memories! I can still remember the first time I heard some of the songs or the exact things I was doing when listening to them. Screaming Infidelities reminds me of my senior year of high school, skipping class to drive around in a friend's new car and sing this song over and over again at the top of our lungs.

Styrofoam Plates reminds me of a college professor that was a bit wacky but taught me so much.

Here's to the Night and Sam's Song remind me of the year I lived in Sugar House and was so poor and trying to survive my first year at Westminster.

I love how music has such a prominent place in many people's lives. People are so connected through music.
